Scott Russell Sanders, director of the Wells Scholars Program at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, and an acclaimed author of personal nonfiction, will be the Luby Casey Campus Ministry Visitor at Guilford College, January 24-26, 2001. He will be the featured speaker for Guilford’s annual Religious Emphasis Week, January 21-27.
The Luby Casey Campus Ministry Visitor program is made possible through a bequest by Luby Casey, a Quaker from Goldsboro, NC, who wished to enable Guilford College to bring a speaker each year who could apply Christian principles to important contemporary issues.
Sanders’ books include The Paradise of Bombs, Writing from the Center, Secrets of the Universe, In Limestone Country, Staying Put, Hunting for Hope, and his latest, The Force of Spirit. Often compared to Wendell Berry, Aldo Leopold, and other writers on spirit, community, and the environment, Sanders has won numerous awards, including the Lannan Literary Award and the Great Lakes Book Award.
Scott Sanders’ public presentation, “Animal Spirits: Communing with Other Creatures,” will be held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, January 25, at the New Garden Friends Meeting House, 801 New Garden Road, adjacent to the Guilford College campus. The program is free and open to the public.
Other events of Sanders’ visit will include visits to classes, meetings with the Quaker Leadership Scholars Program students, and informal teas and discussions. The public is also invited to these teas:
úWednesday, January 24, 4:00 p.m. in the Hut, informal welcome and conversation
úThursday, January 25, 4:00 p.m. in Boren Lounge of Founders Hall, “Spirituality, Community, and the Environment”
úFriday, January 26, 10:30 a.m. in the Hut, “Living As If the Fate of the Earth Matters.”
