Ben ManySick of Pita Works and Elizabeth’s Pizza? Is the cafeteria giving you explosive diarrhea? Here are some other places that you should try.
First of all, Yum Yum’s Hot Dogs, located on Spring Garden Street in the middle of UNCG campus, is reminiscent of a ’50s eatery. Yum Yum’s Serves hot dogs and ice cream — that’s really about it. It’s the only place where your server will be wearing a paper hat, but, for the love of God, do not eat more than two of Yum Yum’s super nitrate- filled dogs unless you are ready to pay the consequences.
Tex and Shirley’s, located in The Friendly Center, is one of the few greasy spoons around. Down-home cooking, huge portions, low prices, and an atmosphere that borders on trashy make Tex and Shirley’s a Sunday- morning hangover must. I recommend the pancakes.
Giacomo’s Italian Grocery, located on High Point Road, makes the best meatball sub that one could imagine. Giacomo makes his own sausage and cheese in the back of the restaurant. The eggplant sandwich is also awesome. It is sort of out of the way, but if you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend it.
Finally, the crowning jewel of them all, a beacon of light that all other restaurants can look to, is the one and only Fisher’s Grille. I did not discover this Mecca of joy until earlier this year, but you can find me there for lunch at least once a week.
The Fisher, at 628 N. Elm Street, has the best burgers and chicken sandwiches in Greensboro.
I am partial to the Dixie burger, piled high with chili and slaw. The fries are awesome and the beer selection is good. The Fisher is cheap, dark, plays good music, and one of the bartenders is kind of hot. I could go on and on.
I hope that this article has given you all some ideas. By the way, never under any circumstance eat at Dolley’s.
