Today’s tragedy took a toll on the whole world, including the world of sports. On board the United Airlines Flight 175, a Boeing 767, were two National Hockey League scouts.Garnet “Ace” Bailey, who directed scouting for the Los Angeles Kings and Mark Bavis, an amateur scout for the Kings, were aboard the second plane to hit the World Trade Center on Tuesday.
Bailey was well known around the league, playing or working for six NHL teams. He won two Stanley Cups with the Boston Bruins. Bavis played collegiate hockey at Boston University and was entering his second year of scouting for the Kings.
In Major League Baseball all games were cancelled for Tuesday. Bud Selig, commisioner of Major League Baseball, said, “Far more important things are at stake than games.” All games are cancelled until further notice. This is the first time since D-Day in 1944, during World War II, that games have been cancelled two days in a row.
Major League Soccer also cancelled all of its games for Wednesday. The Professional Golf Association has postponed all three tournaments starting Thursday. The National Football League is also considering postponing Sundays games.
All the sports world mourns the national tragedy.
