This year has started off with a bang for the Guilford College Women’s soccer team. The team has already played four contests, winning two of them and tying in another. This year the team opened up with Fontbonne College and the women’s team did not disappoint; a soul, the performance of the team in the game showed that they were tough and possessed a lot of heart. The game was a battle that ended in a 2-2 tie. “Fontbonne’s team was really physical and tough, but we were skilled enough to compete with them,” said sophomore Heather Hagelbarger.Though the next game with Greensboro College ended up in a 6-0 loss, the score did not reflect the play of the team. The Quakers gave it all they had and the game was separated by two goals all the way through until the end, when Greensboro pulled it out. The coaching staff was proud of how the team did not give up after being down.
The team was upset because they had suffered their first loss of the season, but the pain did not last long. Just three days later the women took out all their anger and aggression against Averett University. The Quakers dismantled their opponent in a fantastic 14-1 home win. The game was outstanding and the team really showed their talent. The team had their way with the lady Cougars, scoring at will. They scored seven goals in both the first and second periods. The leading scorers were senior Amy Evans with five goals and junior Ashley Moore with two goals.
The lady Quakers finished up a road trip to Atlanta, Georgia this past weekend with a shutout victory over Agnes Scott. The Quakers knew that the only was to keep the momentum of the season rolling forward was to pull out a victory on the road against a tough opponent. Amy Evans and first-year student Jamara Knight scored the goals.
The 2001 fall season is now under way and the lady Quakers are beginning to prove that they can win and are not going to back down to any team. This years team will be lead by Senior midfielder Amy Evans, one of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)’s top returning players, The Guilfordian’s own senior Angela Rioux, an experienced defender, junior Erica Brammer, one of team’s fastest players, junior Kasie Gray and junior goalie Brandee Adams. The ODAC has the squad picked to finish 8th but this year’s team looks good and they have a lot of talent, so expect the Quakers to contend for a position at the top of the polls. The lady Quakers open up conference play on the road Sept. 11 as they battle Lynchburg College. The following Saturday, Sept. 15, the team plays a conference game at home against Randolph-Macon, come out and support the team.
