Do you know who your dorm representative is or what they do? Do you know when Senate meets or holds elections? Judging by the recent turnout at the ballots, probably not. I cannot point an accusing finger at anyone over their apathy towards community activities such as elections because when I lived on campus, I made a pretty poor showing myself.
I was a mentor for about two seconds. My meetings were laughable and I think only one of the four kids still goes to Guilford. I played tennis, which is semi-active at best.
My crowning achievement was when I was in charge of Serendipity cups and T-shirts. Oddly enough three of my friends won the campus wide drawing contest that year. What frightens me is that I probably could have won an election if I had really wanted to.
The point is that kids do not know who to vote for in these elections and as we saw recently, did not have a choice either way because many positions were run uncontested. So why vote or get active in the community at all for that matter?
When I lived on campus all that I cared about was beer and lurking around Bryan like a pirate and that will be the legacy that I leave here. Chris Babcock, Senate Vice-President will leave a very different one than I.
Chris keeps himself so busy with making life generally better for students that I had to set up a meeting with him through Chris’ associate Dave Scott, who even called me the day of to confirm my appointment.
If you want your legacy to be one of piracy, I recommend for starters getting your craziest suitemate loaded off of forties of Hurricane while having a Kung-Fu movie marathon. Hand him a stick and watch the magic begin.
In all seriousness I wish I had been more like Chris and acted upon the things that I cared about. For example, look at these $75 drunk tickets which everybody hates so much. Get all of your friends together and go raise some hell. If you want the freedom to draw on the dorm walls, don’t let one rejected petition stop you, keep bothering somebody. If you do choose the way of apathy like me, at least you will always have the martial arts.
