Just as you can pick out a hockey player by his mullet, you can pick out a tennis player by the warm-up suits they wear even when they aren’t playing. Jenn Wolos wears warm-up suits, and she has got her work cut out for her as the new women’s tennis coach. Wolos, a ‘96 Guilford graduate, inherits three returning players from last year’s team which lost every match. Eventually the team had its season cancelled due to injuries.
Times have changed since Wolos was a player at Guilford. A New Jersey native, Wolos compiled a 34-11 record while playing for the Quakers, receiving 2nd team all-ODAC honors her senior year. The Quakers ranked among the top 25 teams in the country each of Wolos’ three years on the team and finished 2nd in the ODAC each season behind tennis juggernaut Washington and Lee. Practice has not started for the upcoming season, which will include a full schedule and a spring break trip to Hilton Head, SC.
“It’s hard to sit around and wait for the season to start,” said Wolos. “I’m ready to get out there.” The team will start practice in Feburary.
Wolos is certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association(USPTA) and has been a teaching pro in Greensboro and Durham for the past few years while she was getting her masters degree at NC A&T in health studies.
Currently, Wolos teaches PE and health at Oakridge and Bessemer elementary schools in Greensboro. Wolos said, “My goal has always been to teach and coach at the college level. I didn’t expect to get it this early on in my career.”
