Staff EditorialThe Guilfordian would like to apologize to the entire Guilford community for our lack of appropriate, timely coverage of the events surrounding the celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. last Monday.
The Guilfordian is an organization composed almost entirely of student volunteers. As such, it is difficult for the editorial board to exercise control over the exact content of the paper each week. Regardless of this fact, however, we feel that our efforts to include coverage of MLK events in the January 25 issue were insufficient.
The type of legal racial segregation that Dr. King encountered and struggled against no longer exists in the United States. Since his time, however, racism itself has not disappeared. It has become more subtle, more subversive, more subconscious, and perhaps more difficult to identify and combat. In not making a concerted effort to highlight and discuss issues of race and diversity, we as a paper have unwittingly contributed to racism at Guilford College.
For this, we apologize.
In addition, we would like to announce our intention to include more and better coverage of race-oriented issues and events on campus and in the world. We will begin with our celebration of this February as Black History Month, but will continue our efforts throughout the year.
As a student organization, the mission of The Guilfordian is to represent the interests and activities of all Guilford students.
As always,The Guilfordian welcomes input, comments, and suggestions from any and every member of the Guilford College community.
