Something big just happened
on campus, and most of
us barely know about it. Do
you?Two weeks ago, Don
McNemar announced to the
campus and the community
that the Our Time In History
campaign had reached its goal
of raising $50 million. This was
accomplished with an amazing
11 months left until the projected
deadline. It takes a lot
of effort and time to complete
such a task as this. It is impressive
that President
McNemar and all those involved
were able to finish early, and it
gives Guilford a building block
from which to push forward
from.
With this campaign going
on around us, it is amazing that
a vast majority of the students,
myself included, do not really
know or care about the financial
situation of our college.
This campaign is of great importance
to the continuing life of
the college and it needs to be
talked up as much a possible.
With the money from this
campaign, which started in Sept.
1999 and will end Dec. 31,
2002, we will see
improvements in three different
areas of the college. $20
million is being raised for buildings
on campus along with $18
million in endowments for both
students and faculty and $12
million for the continual
sustainability of the college.
McNemar was excited
about reaching the goal so
quickly, yet he is still looking
forward to the challenge of continuing
the drive in the coming
months. He said, “It has definitely
been a huge success and
it feels fantastic but it is still
not over and I am going to continue
to push us beyond the original mark.”
McNemar is also grateful for
the tremendous outpouring of help
and support from the community
and especially from the alumni.
“One of the keys to
this success is people are giving
at every level and they’re all
important to the campaign,” he
said.
This feat can only be seen
as a huge success for Guilford
College. Senior Dain Roose-
Snyder said, “I commend Don
McNemar for undertaking and
completing the campaign which
is of great importance for the
future of the school.”
Looking around campus
we can already see the benefits
of this campaign, especially
when we find ourselves in the
Frank Family Science Center.
Junior biology major Will Allen
said, “Being a science major,
the Frank Family Science Center
makes my life easier. Without
the funding from the Our
Time in History campaign I
would not have had the pleasure
of its facilities.”
Hands down, the community
is impressed by Don
McNemar and all those involved
and their tremendous work and
energy that went into completing
this task.
It appears that even
though many people on campus
do not know the exact situation
around the Our Time in
History campaign and the
college’s financial situation, we
can still understand that this
campaign is a good thing. It
has been a huge success and
will provide an excellent boost
in the coming years.
