Do you like playing basketball with your friends on the hoops outside of Guilford’s YMCA? Yeah? Well, too bad, they’re gone. The hoops were taken down because of the local riff-raff who abused them.
“They were cursing, fighting, leaving trash and trespassing,” said faculty coordinator Joe Agruso. Also, “Both backboards were starting to crack.”
The actions of the unknown offenders go against Guilford’s and the YMCA’s rules and regulations.
It was not just the outside courts that the unwanted citizens used and mistreated. The crowd also infiltrated the inner parameters of the Y.
“Often times they would sneak in the back doors to the gym or enter through the pool and bring the bad atmosphere inside which could potentially harm Y-members or Guilford students,” Agrusom said.
According to director of athletics Mike Ketchum, the hoops will not be replaced. “There is little we can do to police [the local riff-raff’s] use in our off hours, which is when the trouble occurred,” said Ketchum.
Those who once played basketball outside of the YMCA will play there no more. Guilford students’ choices for outside recreation declines further from where it once was because of the unwanted antics of uncontrollable locals.
