Editor’s Note: The following statement was released by the Guilford College Office of College Relations earlier today. Check back with our website later in the week for updates, and look for comprehensive coverage in our next issue Oct. 25, following the college’s fall break.
GREENSBORO-Guilford College has rescinded its offer to host a debate
between the two leading candidates for North Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat, which was scheduled Oct. 19 at Dana Auditorium on campus.
Late today, the college delivered its decision in a letter to the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters, sponsor of the event, and made the following statement:
“It is clear to Guilford that the two candidates are manipulating a well-crafted debate plan by the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters Educational Foundation Inc. for their own purposes and have circumvented a process that would have produced a first-rate, authentic political debate.
“For a number of months, Guilford has expended time, energy and finances to prepare Dana Auditorium and the campus to host this important event. With no agreement from the candidates on the debate plan, and with less a week before the event, there is neither the time nor the opportunity to make appropriate preparations for a quality presentation.
“We are confident that NCAB and UNC Television have done everything possible to make the event a reality at Guilford, and for those efforts we are deeply grateful.”
UNC Television is production partner for the event that was confirmed by the organizers Aug. 14 and gained support of both candidates Sept. 13. As of today, the candidates had not reached agreement on the format and other details for the Oct. 19 event.
