If you have grown tired of Quaker Village, Tate Street may be the place to go.Located by the campus of UNC-Greensboro, Tate Street offers a strip of 22 different businesses to suit the common college student. Parking is limited and a hassle – due to a crowded area and constant flow of traffic – but the rewards are endless. The businesses are mostly restaurants, which offer a vast array of foods.
Manhattan Subs & Pizza offers two slices and a salad for $2.99 and a large, one topping pizza for $6.99.
Another pizza place to check out is the New York Pizza restaurant just down the street. New York Pizza has an Italian deli right next to it that, like Manhattan, serves sandwiches, soups, and salads for those not in the mood for pizza.
India Palace Restaurant offers an intimate atmosphere and exotic food to its customers. Though it has a very limited number of tables, India Palace does have take-out and a lunch buffet for only $5.95. The service is outstanding, but to those who have sensitive stomachs, be warned that the food is very spicy. India Palace also has a vegetarian menu for those not interested in meat.
Another option for vegetarians is Govinda’s Vegetarian Restaurant, which has a $7.99 buffet lunch and an $8.99 buffet dinner. Govinda’s also includes smoothies and vegetarian sandwiches for those who wish to skip the buffet.
New to the Tate Street community is the Mexican restaurant El Carreton, which opened Oct. 24. Located on top of the Italian Deli, El Carreton’s archway architecture and Mexican paintings give it an authentic Mexican appeal. It also offers a bar and inexpensive prices on the menu. Try the lunch burrito, which is made of steak, rice and beans rolled into a fresh-baked wrap. It’s only $4.75.
Coffee drinkers should try Tate Street Coffee, where you can get huge mugs of your favorite coffee for less than three dollars. The setting is also attractive to lovers of jazz who can see numerous posters of artists such a John Coltrane and Miles Davis lining the walls. Tate Street Coffee also offers live jazz concerts every Saturday morning.
Music lovers should try Gate City Noise, which offers the best artists of yesterday and today as well as Greensboro’s best selection of independent artists. The shop is very similar to B.B.’s, so expect some marked-down prices.
For any student (or teacher) who needs to have something copied, look no farther than the 24/7 Kinko’s that resides right next to Manhattan Subs & Pizza.
All in all, Tate Street is a prime place to go for those looking to kill a typical day in Greensboro.
