Amanda “A.J.” Robertson sat relaxed and comfortable in her space. Soft-spoken, with a touch of a Southern drawl, this senior from Eden, North Carolina, cheerfully spoke of her current sport, volleyball.
“We play with six,” she said. “I’ve been playing since seventh grade. The past two years I’ve hit middle, and this year I’m hitting kind of everywhere. It’s a big change, but it feels good.”
On the court she’s a blur of action, calling out plays, giving advice to her teammates, and playing multiple positions in the front line. Robertson wears her role of team captain and plays her positions so well that she was named to the Greensboro College Invitational Tournament the weekend of September 6-7.
“It was a great honor,” Robertson said. “But I would have preferred the team to have won, and not just me.”
This modesty is typical of Robertson. “She’s a great player, and a really good person,” said teammate, junior Kendra Harvey. “She’s a very aggressive player, probably the best on the team. She’s someone that everyone can look up to.”
This is obvious during team practices.
“A.J., you’re a step too close,” the coach calls. A.J. calmly readjusts herself, and as soon as she gets the ball, she delivers a beautiful spike. The team breaks into spontaneous applause.
Freshman teammate Tish Lewis greatly admires her team captain. “A.J.’s a great leader,” Lewis said. “She has great control over the team, and she knows what she’s doing. A.J. listens well to what you have to say, and then gives input back.”
Robertson majors in Chemistry, Biology, and Health sciences and is in the process of applying to medical school. She also plays varsity basketballand has plans to continue playing volleyball once she graduates.
Robertson says: “There are a lot of coed tournaments and stuff that you can play in once you graduate. It’ll definitely keep me going.”
“A.J. is a very fine athlete who seems to always figure out a way to overachieve in everything she does – not just athletics,” says Head Volleyball Coach, Glenda Parrish. “She is our most talented athlete this year, and also our team leader. She is very deserving of the All-Tournament Honor. She’ll do whatever the team needs her to do, and her teammates and coaches respect her a great deal.”
The Guilford Volleyball team has played competitively but is still searching for its first win. The conference opener was played against Hollins on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Ragan-Brown Field house.
