In recents weeks there have been multiple programs about alcohol on our campus. The week following our fall break was designated as alcohol awareness week but due to the boxcutter development the programs were overlooked and basically shafted. something that could have been a positive, educational week of programming was actaully just an average week at Guilford. Not to say there weren’t good programs, there were in fact some very interesting oppertunities, one which I organized. For those who came to Drunk Sex and Hot Fudge I’d like to say thank you, you made the program. So you may wonder why I write this letter, I write to express a concern I have. When we came to college did we leave all sense of responsibility with our mommies and daddies or have we just lost it somewhere here at school? What I mean is there are rules and regulations set for a reason, for you, not just so administration can bust your balls or give you citations. Alcohol can be used in fun recreational ways but when your drinking starts to affect others in any way isn’t that when you have to step back and think? 2 out of 3 sexual assaults on college campuses involve alcohol, this statistic is what it is for a reason. You’re not always at your best when you drink so remember that and be safe about it. Someone once said to me “a true feminist would never let herself get raped.” Well the thing is no one ever lets themselves get raped, its a horrible thing that can happen despite how hard you may fight. So as you enjoy your beer and jungle punch please just remember that there are people who get hurt and not everyone has positive experiences with drinking. I don’t write this letter to sound like a total square, i just have to think that there is a better way to treat ourselves and eachother. This is a great time in our lives where the only people we have to answer to is ourselves and sometimes when that isn’t being done administration steps in. Don’t let it get to that point. Be aware of your own actions-Malisa Mann
