Senior forward soccer star Tim Imafidon earned a great distinction on Dec 12. Imafidon was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Adidas Division III men’s soccer All-American teams.
In the 2003 season Imafidon led the Quakers with 15 goals and 7 assists. Imafidon has scored 29 goals and tallied 67 points in his four years at Guilford, placing him second on the college’s all-time scoring list behind Chris Jenkins ’86.
“I couldn’t do it without my teammates, coach, and God,” said Imafidon. “All things are possible through Christ, who strengthens me.”
Liam Behrens, the men’s soccer coach, has watched Imafidon mature throughout his Guilford soccer career. “He’s just a good person – very kind, very caring. He definitely deserves the award … as talented as he is, he’s never put himself above his teammates,” said Behrens.
Over 150 Quaker athletes have been honored as All-Americans since 1959. Of these only one male soccer player Jenkins (NAIA All-American) was named prior to Imafidon.
Imafidon has received numerous athletic honors for his game since his freshman year, including Guilford’s prestigious Nereus C. English ’26 Athletic Leadership Award.
In both 2000 and 2001 he was second-team All-ODAC pick. He also was given the distinction as Guilford’s first Division III NSCAA/Adidas All-South selection (3rd team). As team captain in 2002, he was First-Team NSCAA/Adidas All-South Region pick and First-team All-ODAC selection. In 2003, he continued to excel when he was twice named as the ODAC player of the week and selected for First Team All-South.
“He put more emotion in his game and cares more about winning than anyone else I’ve ever played with,” said fellow teammate Bo White, a junior. “He lets us know how important it was to take advantage of your time playing … because it’s over so quickly.”
Imafidon has lived up to his own advice. As he leaves Guilford for dental school, he also has the tough choice of whether he should play professional soccer or not. For most young men this is merely a dream. But Imafidon, has already been scouted for several teams, by an A-league team in New York and a team in North Carolina.
“[Imafidon] may be the first one and only one [to play professionally] in soccer Guilford history,” said Behrens. “People need to know he’s a true student athlete. He’s done very well in school and been active in the Guilford community.”
Because of his talent on and off the field, Imafidon will need to make a commitment to one love or another – athletics or academics. As a hall director, community leader, and exceptional student double-majoring in Biology and Health Science, he still speculates.
“All my friends want me to go pro . . . I’ll pray about it. I want to know what will be best for me and my family,” Imafidon said.
As for teammate Junior Darriel Cannon, “I see him ending up being very successful in the future. I look up to him. He’s like my big brother.”Guilford Scores
