I feel like the maintenance staff should do a better job of clearing the walkways off because it gets icy and it’s dangerous – people can fall. All they did was put sand on it, and that doesn’t really help so much. It was also pretty annoying to have to wake up at 6:30 in the morning when most of the state is in a winter emergency and everything is being closed, closed, closed the night before. Guilford is like, ‘maybe we’ll close it, maybe not!’ -Jonathon Vogt, first-year, Theatre Studies major
The affect that it had on us was really none, due to the fact that we are a 24 hour, 7 days a week operation. I’m so grateful that there were no accidents on campus. Just because it was an inclement weather issue, that did not stop the enforcement of parking violations. I know that a few students are upset about that, that they received tickets trying to park close to the buildings in restricted areas.

Since I have to drive from Winston Salem, I wasn’t able to be here on Monday. And being also that I’m a parent, childcare is often canceled whenever there’s any kind of bad weather, or either it’s delayed until late in the day so that I miss my classes, which is typically what happens as an adult student.

Guilford College is almost always open during snow days, and as Early College students there’s no exception for us so we have to get here. I would appreciate, after trudging all the way from my home through snowy conditions, that when I arrive at Guilford the least they could do is have their parking lot shoveled for us. Even when all the snow is melted off of the streets, the parking lot is a hazard zone.

I have two children, so when we have snowy weather like that it does affect me when it comes to working. I can’t leave them at home – they’re so young – and then if the power goes out and I’m not at home, and I’m here, then they will freeze to death. So, that keeps me from coming to work. Then we have some people that come on to work, and they don’t have small kids so they don’t have to worry about anything. That way, they’re able to keep the cafeteria going.
-Lisa Harris, Dining Services
It’s been a tough semester, because we’ve had so many Mondays that we haven’t had class due to winter weather. It’s been tough because students don’t come on Monday because of weather and then they skip class on Wednesday – then they miss a whole week.

I live off-campus, and it was really hard when they kept school open, and I walked to school and fell, several times. I was really mad that they made school open because it made it really difficult for the teachers and the students that live off-campus. _
