To be honest, I was surprised and somewhat disappointed by the lack of nudity during Serendipity. Maybe I was just in the wrong places at the wrong times, but everywhere I went, the people I saw were all in states of near-complete dress.
Apparently a couple of rugby girls un(prom)dressed and did a lap after their game, and I’m sure there was plenty of disrobing in more discreet places, but overall the weekend was fairly modest.
Nevertheless, people had a good time even with their clothes on.
Jim Morrison and his band rocked out the hoedown on Friday night. Dancers twirled and do-si-do-ed on Hege-Cox lawn while others munched on a caf cookout. And while the food wasn’t particularly good, the drinks certainly were.
The Sim Redmond Band followed up next with a hot set of reggae and world music jams. Though the show’s attendance was a little sparse, the band kept the energy level high.
“I liked them,” said sophomore Tara Alan. “They were very happy and fun to dance around to.”
Unfortunately, that night’s Hip Hop Showcase was a bit disappointing. The acoustics in the gym are not suited for a concert, especially for hip hop, and all the audience could hear was the thundering bass. Still, a good crowd stayed to see Little Brother and Nappy Roots perform.
After the show, there was a general migration over to Bryan, where a DJ spinning more hip hop was on duty for the afterparty. Dancing was inevitable, and the Quad was packed ’til quiet hours with throngs of people grinding against each other in various states of intoxication.
Saturday dawned bright and sunny, but sadly, it didn’t stay that way. The inflatables on Founders Lawn would have been a lot more fun if it hadn’t started raining. Still, some people got a bit of playing in before the clouds opened.
“I got my ass beat, but it was fun,” said junior Paul Masters about the jousting game. “It was good times.”
The Virginia Coalition put on a lively show on Saturday night. My favorite part was definitely when the hot bass player tossed me a jar of Peter Pan peanut butter. Or maybe it was when the monkey playing the keyboards threw his stool off the stage. Either way, it was a fun show.
By the apartments party later that night, Guilford had gotten into the Serendipity swing, and a huge crowd rocked out to bands Tiger Bear Wolf, Jet By Day, and The Nein until Security shut them down at quiet hours.
At that point, I had begun to think I knew everyone that goes to school here, and so it was an eye opening experience to keep running into people I didn’t even recognize. I guess that’s what it feels like to go to a real college.
Overall Serendipity was definitely a fun weekend, even if it wasn’t what it had been built up to be. It was a welcome break from homework and studying, and a chance to to really kick back and enjoy college life.
My only real problem was waking up for class on Monday.
