To the Editor:
I must write to express my disappointment with the content of Richard Kimball’s convocation address. Being of his generation, and having experienced years of frustration over stupid political games and the incredible misinformation that rains down upon us in an election season, I can appreciate his cynicism about the political process. In addition, I truly applaud his efforts to create and sustain Project Vote Smart; solid, unbiased information is sorely needed!
However, I wish he had been more focused on what we CAN do to make a positive difference – VOTE (after seeking objective information – perhaps from Project Vote Smart), and then WORK with organizations that create better lives for people when the government fails to do so.
It is so easy to get discouraged and cynical in the present climate of highly negative campaign rhetoric, and unfortunately, I felt Kimball was. I had hoped that he would INSPIRE us to vote and to take appropriate action, in order to fully participate in this democracy. Since he did not, I hope we will all find our inspiration elsewhere and VOTE and otherwise make a difference where we can!
