Dear Guilford Community, I’d like to issue everyone a belated Welcome, or Welcome Back, to Guilford College. Sometimes we forget what a place means to us until we leave and then return. I hope everyone is finding Guilford to be everything they remembered – or expected – it to be.
That said, I also hope everyone is adjusting – or re-adjusting – to college life easily.
I’m writing to inform you about The Guilfordian, your student newspaper: why we’re here, what we do, and how we do it.
According to our constitution, the primary function of our existence is to serve the students of Guilford College. It is our job to keep the community aware of current news and events in a timely, accurate, unbiased, and wholly factual manner.
We’re a small segment of the Guilford population, and we can only see so much of campus happenings. We encourage those who feel their viewpoint has not been adequately represented to contact us by writing a letter to the editor, applying for a columnist position, or joining the Guilfordian staff. We understand that there is always room for improvement, and we happily accept suggestions and comments from you, our audience.
We strive to live up to our mission statement: that we will promote fair and accurate coverage of life on this campus and beyond; and that we will honor the college’s Quaker heritage by providing a space for open dialogue between members of this community.
Each individual section of the newspaper helps serve these purposes.
The News section, located in the first few pages of the paper, will provide typical “Who-What-When-Where-Why-How” coverage of activities, events, and changes centered on the Guilford College community.
The World and Nation section will give news highlights of the city, state, nation, and world outside of the “Guilford Bubble.” In the World and Nation Section, we strive to make a connection between life at Guilford and the rest of the world.
The Features section will provide coverage of other events in a non-news style. This section will routinely include things such as movie, restaurant, and book reviews, as well as descriptions of things in the greater Greensboro area, in addition to events and activities on campus.
The Sports section will provide coverage of our athletic teams and events. Here you will find not only sports scores, but also a look into the inner workings of a sport and its players.
The Forum section is where we provide space for people to express their opinions, specifically on news as it relates to life on this campus. There will consistently be a staff editorial, which states the position of The Guilfordian on some campus-related issue.
The Forum section is also where we provide space for you, our readers, to have your say. If you want to be heard, submit a letter to the editor – we’ll run it. If you have complaints on how The Guilfordian has provided coverage, this is the space where we want you to tell us that we’ve messed up. The Forum exists especially to provide a place for open dialogue, and we hope you’ll take advantage of this opportunity.
The Forum is only as good as community members make it.
Thank you for reading this newspaper. A lot of work goes into each issue by the staff writers, editors, and layout, photography, and advertising staffs, and everyone who makes this paper possible. Regardless, we wouldn’t be here if you didn’t think we needed to, and for that we thank you.
