The Guilford Athletics department welcomes two new staff members, Emily Johnson and Santes Beatty.
Emily Johnson joined Guilford College’s athletic staff Sept. 1 as an assistant women’s soccer coach. She will focus on the Quakers’ goalkeepers with head coach Eric Lewis.
Johnson earned Second Team All-America honors in 1993 as a goaltender for Ithaca College and played on the Bombers’ 1991 national championship team. She earned Second Team Academic All-District I honors in 1994 and 1995 and ranks second among Ithaca’s career goals against average leaders (0.43). Her 37 career wins and 34 career shutouts rank third in the school’s history.
Ithaca compiled a 67-10-13 record in Johnson’s four seasons and reached the NCAA Division III playoffs four times.
A native of Shutesbury, M.A., Johnson received her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Ithaca in 1995 and is pursuing her master’s degree in physical education from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland.
After graduating from Ithaca, Johnson assisted the women’s soccer team and taught in Cortland’s physical education department from 1995-98. She helped the Red Dragons to a 32-20-4 record in three seasons. Following her tenure at Cortland, she spent a year as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Bentley College.
Johnson served as the head women’s soccer coach at Ferrum College from 2000-02 and spent the past two seasons as an assistant women’s soccer coach and goalkeeper trainer at Greensboro College. The Pride compiled a 23-13-4 record in her two years.
Former Guilford College standout Santes Beatty joined the Quakers’ athletics staff as the football team’s new receivers coach Monday. He will aid Mike Ketchum, who enters his 14th year as Guilford’s head coach.
Beatty, a native of Raeford, N.C., attended Guilford from 1993 to 1997 after graduating from Hoke County High School. He worked extensively with Guilford’s Office for Campus Life after he graduated with a degree in sociology. Beatty served as the Director of African American Affairs and Multicultural Services from 1998-2004. In addition to working with the football team, he serves as Guilford’s Africana Retention Coordi-nator for Campus Life.
During his first two years at Guilford, Beatty played quarterback for the football team. He led the 1994 unit to a school record-tying eight victories while passing for 1,500 yards and 13 touchdowns. His five rushing touchdowns helped him rank third on the team with 30 points. He received Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors for his performance.
His 1994 campaign ranks among the most prolific in Guilford’s history as an NCAA Division III school. For his career, Beatty stands among Guilford’s NCAA Division III career leaders in pass attempts (321), completions (129), completion percentage (46.6%), yards (1,759), passing touchdowns (14), and total touchdowns (20).
Ketchum returns 34 letter winners from last season’s 2-8 team. The ODAC’s coaches picked Guilford sixth in their preseason poll. The Quakers’ season opener is Sept. 11 at Methodist.
