“It’s coming,” said senior Joe Pelcher as he introduced the first act of the Drag Queen and King show in Bryan Jr. Auditorium on Nov. 1. “Trevor, stall.” “Who’s Trevor?” asked sophomore Trevor Corning. Trevor was dressed in drag, but he was not one of the scintillating performances of the night. “Like my ring? If I hit someone it could do some damage.”
Corning looked bronze and stunning in a blue bedazzled dress from Carolina Thrift, a large diamond ring, and blonde wig.
“Thank you for your patience, we’re on Guilford drag time,” said senior Sarah “Spencer” Eisenberg and then the show began.
The first act started with a kiss. “Roxanne” played in the background as Dix Washington and Eddie mouthed the words to the song. Dix and Eddie are two of the Charm City Boys, a drag group from Baltimore, MD.
Demetria was supposed to perform next, but the music didn’t work. Sassy Stevens took the stage and performed to “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher. Sassy could have easily passed for Cher with her long and curly black wig, black boots, tasseled leather jacket and stunning makeup.
“This next performer is going to be in my apartment tonight,” said Corning as he introduced Selia de Cat’s Meow to the stage. However, the sound crew wasn’t quite ready with her music because the sound system was very precarious.
“I’m getting the hold on finger. Oh wait, now I’m getting another finger,” said Corning as the audience sat waiting for more.
Selia, a female burlesque entertainer, took the stage wearing a sequined top hat, jacket, and shorts with a silver bikini top underneath. She had an umbrella, a chair, and a balloon.
After Selia’s sparkling performance, another Charm City Boy took the stage. Shane performed to “What’s a Guy Gotta Do” by Joe Nichols. Shane interacted with the crowd a lot and even handed out Mardi gras beads.
Mr. Washington took the stage wearing a robe over a white shirt and green shorts. His quirky antics made his performance highly amusing. He danced to “Love You Madly” by Cake. By the time he took his robe off and poured water on himself, the audience was laughing hysterically.
“I’m Cinderella,” said Pelcher as he cleaned up the water that Mr. Washington poured over himself at the end of his performance.
As the night went on, Eddie danced to a cover of “Welcome to the Jungle” and the highlight of that performance was when he pulled a banana out of his pants and gave it to a girl in the audience, then sat on senior Max Kochinke’s lap.
Sassy Stevens came back on stage and performed to Pink’s “So What” with lots of energy. Selia came back to do another burlesque performance and wore a black dress and boa.
“Eye of the Tiger” came on next, and Shane performed as a newly turned vampire. Then Shane bit Spencer and turned him into a vampire as well.
“Wow that really sucked. blood. It sucked blood,” said Corning as he prepared to introduce Demetria, but her music still wouldn’t work.
“One of the rats chewed on my CD; that’s why it isn’t working,” said Demetria, so instead of performing at the Drag show, Demetria performed at the Coming Out ball that followed the show.
Sassy and Selia were the last two to perform before the finale. The show ended with the Charm City Boys: Dix Washington, Eddie, Shane, and Spencer. Dix was on a circle table and he was dressed as a puppet master and the rest were his marionettes.
They all wore black, red, and white outfits. After letting Dix control them for a while, the marionettes decided to revolt. They tied Dix up and put an American flag bandanna around his mouth, then pulled him around as if he was a kid on a leash.
“Oh, it was hot; I like being tied up,” said Demetria.
“Me too,” said Pelcher.
Though the Drag show had come to an end, the night was not over yet. The Coming Out ball, the annual dance where students are urged to “come as you aren’t,” followed the drag show in the Community Center.
