The Quaker football season drew to an end on Nov. 17; however, they got another win after the season finished. The team retained the title of the Gate City Soup Bowl champs after Greensboro College was forced to forfeit. With the win, the team improved their record to 4-6.On Sept. 5, the Pride outscored the Quakers by five, but Guilford was later awarded the win due to an ineligible player. Greensboro also had to forfeit their win against Washington and Lee on Sept. 19.
“This was an unfortunate administrative oversight and was not the fault of the student-athlete,” said Greensboro head coach Randy Hunt in an interview for the Pride Web site.
“When you talk about applications and record-keeping, it is very, very difficult; it is very hard and there are so many rules,” said Guilford head coach Kevin Kiesel. “I am not sure what happened; it was an oversight. They made a mistake and I give them credit.”
Kiesel was not interested in getting the win by forfeit.
“I just ignored it. I didn’t feel like reading about it and finding out,” said Kiesel.
The Soup Bowl trophy was returned last week to Kiesel’s office, the trophy’s home for the last four years. The last loss to Greensboro was in 2004, which means that the Quaker streak continues for another year. This year’s senior class has not lost to Greensboro in their careers; however, it depends who you talk to on whether the forfeit was a win.
“I saw we won on the Guilford Web site; coach didn’t even tell us,” said sophomore defensive back Kenneth Hyman. “The win is not important to the team because we really actually lost on the field, so it doesn’t matter.”
“You win football games on the field and we didn’t do that,” said Kiesel.
Coach Hunt felt the same way about the forfeit.
“This incident does not take away the many positives from the 2009 Greensboro College football team,” Hunt said.
Even with a 4-6 record after the two forfeits, this year’s Greensboro squad had the most wins since 2002, and had their best conference record in the program’s history at 4-3.
The rivalry will be renewed next year and the Guilford team is looking forward to the game, especially Kiesel.
“The best part against being in such a great rivalry is you get to redeem yourself.”
A true winner will be crowned next year at the Gate City Soup Bowl when the rivalry is renewed.
