Over the course of our time at Guilford, we will make the walk to Harris Teeter many times. We will frequent Quaker Village. We will visit friends in West Borough and see movies at Friendly Center. And for some people that will make up the majority of their time in Greensboro.Which, if you ask me, is a crying shame.
While the area around campus is wonderfully convenient, it is far less than the tip of the iceberg. And you cannot in good faith call Greensboro your home, temporarily or otherwise, while rarely venturing further than CVS.
But honestly, who would want to restrict themselves to these few square miles when there is a vibrant, vigorous town just begging to be painted red.
Maybe my quickly growing love for this particular ‘Boro comes from the great contrast I see between it and the place I lived for so many years. Maybe it is because I landed here completely of my own accord. Or maybe it is because Greensboro really and truly is a great place to live.
You will never be able to revel in all that Greensboro has to offer if you do not leave campus. I realize that you are busy. And you are afraid of getting lost because your GPS is dead. And you have a hangnail. And it is raining or snowing, or too hot or too cold. And that it is just so easy to stay in the warm, convenient bubble of warm, friendly Guilford.
But if you do not burst the bubble yourself and grab Greensboro by the horns your bubble will be burst when, upon leaving Guilford, you realize that you know nothing beyond her very green borders.
Are you still not convinced that there is a world worth exploring just past Chick-fil-A?
That is where this column comes in. Week in and week out we will be here poking your bubble. We will tempt you and tickle all of your fancies with glimpses of this beautifully dynamic ‘Boro.
