Guilford hosted Roanoke on Sept. 22; the game was a hard-fought struggle. The Quakers went back and forth with Roanoke, but fell 3-0 (28-30, 19-25, 18-25) to the Maroons. The Quakers played a good game despite the loss.”This was not the best we have played but not the worst we have played either,” said junior setter Taylor Phillips.
Sophomore Brittany Freeman and junior Traci Teague both had nine kills apiece while junior Laura Kopald chipped in with six kills.
Junior Mary Moody recorded 22 digs with Freeman, earning 12 digs and first-year Taylor Whitley digging out 11.
“Tomorrow can be very good for us because different people have the opportunities to gain a starting spot, and we might find that the new combinations work better than what we have been experimenting with this season,” said Phillips.
Roanoke had a strong presence on the court that was tough for the Quaker to outmatch. It was a rough conference game loss, but the Quakers look to bounce back on Oct. 1 against Salem College.
Guilford went on the road to play at Salem College Sept. 24. They won 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16). The Quakers got another non-conference win, bringing their record to eight and six.
Freeman put away 10 kills and her first-year teammate Malikah French added eight.
Whitley had 25 assists and Phillips added 12 digs for the Quakers.
“As a team, we played well, winning three consecutive matches, but I feel we didn’t play up to our level,” said sophomore right side hitter Katherine Weikel.
“I have all the confidence in our team, and as long as we play together and play with heart, we will come out on top. We plan on having a successful rest of the season, and playing to our fullest potential.
