The newly released pop song “Die With A Smile,” an unexpected duet between Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, was released on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024.
The collaboration came when Gaga was finishing her own album in Malibu. Then, she received word from Bruno to come by his studio and hear what he was working on. She arrived around midnight, and the two stayed up all night to finish the song according to an article by the Hollywood Reporter.
As of Nov. 9, “Die With A Smile” is No. 2 on the Billboard Top 100. This collaboration feels so iconic for many reasons, one being the fact that both artists are among the biggest megastars in the music industry, and they have been for over 15 years.
This song gives out a special message on cherishing every moment with loved ones. Never taking those moments for granted and realizing nothing is ever guaranteed.
Their music video on Youtube currently has 274 million views, and it is also in the top spots through all music platforms. Both artists have performed at halftime during Super Bowls and many other major musical events, a status that when combined with the world of TikTok, has provided so much exposure to the collaboration. With this song and its famous producers, it’s very well known across the Guilford College campus. Sophomore Emma Garland, who’s a member of the Guilford women’s lacrosse team, gave her thoughts on the hit song.
“I think it’s a great song,” Garland said. “I liked the outfits they wore in the music video and how some people dressed up as them this Halloween. Their voices blend really well together and it’s definitely been on repeat for me.”
This song just hits the right tone. It’s soft and easygoing but really takes off at the high notes, giving it a lift that makes it stand out. Gaga and Mars show that even as veterans in the industry, they’ve still got what it takes to make a #1 hit.
The key to their success lies not only in tone, but also poignant lyricism. The lyric “nobody’s promised tomorrow” reminds us to cherish the moments with the people we love, as life can change in an instant.
It’s important to realize the significance of being with loved ones because you don’t want to regret not being there for them.
Personally, the lyrics just felt so touching and down-to-earth, and that really makes the song so much better. It feels real to many who listen.
Gaga’s voice was incredible toward the end and it felt like a blast from the past. Sophomore student Knox Butka, who is a member of the Guilford College swimming and rugby teams, gave her thoughts on the overall song.
“I think the song, while undoubtedly highly produced and edited, does master that nostalgic feeling that all the other music critics are talking about while still feeling a bit modern,” she said. Butka uses the word “modern” as a derogatory term to refer to contemporary and popular music released today.
She points out her love for Gaga and how this collaboration was a surprise.
“I am such a big fan of Gaga, though I’m more inclined to her earlier records,” she said. “Her single release, ‘Disease,’ is a better example of her pop prowess. However, the feature with Bruno was a delightful surprise and a throwback to the top 40 when I still rode the bus to school and used Pandora and an iPod Shuffle.”
Others may not be feeling the song and collab as much. One Guilford freshman Lauren Martin, for instance, admitted to seeing the appeal, despite it not being her particular style of music.
While opinions are mixed, the consensus among many online and at Guilford College is that the song and collaboration were a success, solidifying that Mars and Gaga remain dominant forces in the music industry.
