In the modern Western zodiac, there are 12 signs that can be divided into categories such as rising, sun, moon or venus signs. Most commonly known is a person’s sun sign, which is based on the month and day they were born. This sign prominently influences you, as well as how you present yourself outwardly and your overall “vibe.” If you’d like to find out more about yours, keep reading!
ARIES (The Ram) March 21 – April 19
One of three signs representing the fire element, Aries indicates a maverick — someone who creates their own path. Although they are smart and often find unconventional ways of doing things, Aries individuals tend to be impulsive and hotheaded, occasionally losing their intelligence to their temper. Even when angry, the people born under this sign are brutally honest, meaning that passive-aggressiveness is not written in the stars for them. With an Aries, honesty is the best policy.
TAURUS (The Bull) April 20 – May 20
A representative of the earth element, a Taurus is someone who is practical, drama-avoidant and detail-oriented. Although they have a reputation for being stubborn and headstrong, Tauruses also have a knowledge and perspective-seeking side that allows them to see the more logical standpoint when it is presented — this may lead to a changing of their opinion. With a Taurus, patience is key.
GEMINI (The Twins) May 21 – June 20
One of the three air elementals, Gemini individuals are adaptable, energetic and imaginative. Because of their ability to “blend” into different groups of people by adjusting their outward expression, they may come off as two-faced. Deep down, they are genuine individuals with a need for emotional connection and support. With a Gemini, their outward “mask” is just the tip of the iceberg.
CANCER (The Crab) June 21 – July 22
As a member of the water element club, Cancer individuals are intuitive, empathetic and often standoffish at first. Like a crab, they use a hard shell for protection for their soft insides. Cancerians feel deeply and care a lot. Although empathetic, they also need frequent reassurances that others still like them. With a Cancer, it’s better to care too much than too little.
LEO (The Lion) July 23 – Aug. 22
A member of the fire elementals, Leos are bold, hardworking and determined to be the best they can be. Like a lion, they are proud, but also acknowledge the work they have to put in for others to have faith in them that would let them have that pride. Intense in both their interpersonal and work lives, this sign thrives off challenges and problems that require novel solutions, although they can butt heads with another person who leans toward a “leadership” role in a group setting. With a Leo, you need to live a little.
VIRGO (The Virgin) Aug. 23 – Sept. 22
Born under a sign belonging to the earth element group, Virgos are sophisticated, trustworthy and love gaining knowledge about a wide variety of topics. These individuals loathe being let down in any circumstance. Plans falling through or unexpected things happening are enough to set Virgos off, and they are likely to silently stew in their anger. With a Virgo, you learn a lot by listening.
LIBRA (The Scales) Sept. 23 – Oct. 22
The only inanimate object of the zodiac, Libra falls under the air element. These individuals, like scales, are best when well-balanced and value harmony between facets of their lives. They are known to be compassionate and selfless, but are more “dreamers” than “doers” — many of their brilliant ideas never come to fruition as a result. With Libra, balance is best created rather than found.
SCORPIO (The Scorpion) Oct. 23 – Nov. 21
One of the water signs, Scorpio represents a person who loves to debate, make their own path and won’t back down from a challenge issued by another person. Scorpios are often motivated by emotion, which can be both a blessing and curse depending on the emotion and circumstance. With a Scorpio, competition + emotion = motivation.
SAGITTARIUS (The Archer) Nov. 22 – Dec. 21
One of the fire signs, a Sagittarius is someone who is both a leader and trailblazer. They are caring and have a large imagination, but are also brutally honest. Because of this, they may occasionally face the accusation of being heartless or cold. This is not the case, however. They are actually quite empathetic and good at seeing others’ perspectives. With a Sagittarius, honesty is how they care.
CAPRICORN (The Goat) Dec. 22 – Jan. 19
Capricorn is a sign in the earth element group, and represents someone who is decisive, determined and a rule follower. They tend to gravitate toward traditions and set ways of doing things. Because of this they may rub some people the wrong way, especially those that do things unconventionally, such as Aries. They do not like uncertainties and like those that aren’t wishy-washy. With a Capricorn, consistency is communication.
AQUARIUS (The Water Bearer) Jan. 20 – Feb. 18
Mysterious, adaptable and just, people born under this air sign will actively dodge any labels one tries to place upon them. They believe heavily in the evolution of oneself and humanity, and that nobody truly stays the same, especially not themselves. They have their own set of ethics which they follow staunchly, and that fact may ruffle some feathers. With Aquarius, change is inevitable.
PISCES (Fish) Feb. 19 – March 20
People born under the water sign pisces are imaginative, intuitive balls of energy. They may “know” things without being able to explain why–especially when sussing out a person’s true nature. This may make them gravitate towards outwardly prickly signs such as Scorpios and Cancerians. They need time alone after a period of being sociable to reconcile their internal (private) and external (public) self to maintain a healthy balance between the two, which may come off as disdain or dislike for others on occasion. With Pisces, no dream is too big.
