Quaker lunch teaches about core values

Guilford’s core values consist of community, diversity, equality, excellence, integrity, justice and stewardship. On Thursday, Feb. 1, Guilford offered students, faculty, staff and other community members the opportunity to learn about the origins of the College’s values through the February Quaker Lunch. The event also explored new and traditional teachings of world religions and was organized by Friends Center and Friends Historical Collection Outreach Coordinator Kate Hood.

Faculty present on projects

The 2017-18 academic year’s Principled Problem Solving faculty fellows are Associate Professor of English Diya Abdo, Associate Professor of History Zhihong Chen, Associate Professor of English Myléne Dressler and Professor of Business Management Michael Dutch. On Monday, Feb. 5 the four faculty fellows presented on their fellowship projects in a panel hosted by the Center for Principled Problem Solving. They spoke on the impact of their research and community engagement, which was intended to advance the curriculum of PPS.

Faculty present on “fake news”

“Fake news” and “alternative facts” are both phrases commonly used today. On Monday, Feb. 5, Visiting Assistant Professor for English and journalist Cheryl Hatch and Part-Time Faculty Ryan Artrip spoke on a panel at a dinner and discussion about these two terms, their use and meaning. The event was coordinated and organized by the Honors Department and the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement and was intended to promote discussion about these terms.

Guilford Alum presents on Red Sand Project

Molly Gochman ’01 is a New York City-based experimental artist and activist. She is the creator of the Red Sand Project, in which communities around the world spread red sand to raise awareness for modern human trafficking. On Tuesday, Feb. 6, Gochman hosted a hands-on workshop at Guilford entitled “The Space Between,” organized by Associate Professor of Art Mark Dixon. The event was open to the public and encouraged participation from its attendees.

Guilford hosts Financial Aid Night

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, Guilford’s Office of Admission and Office of Financial Aid hosted Financial Aid Night, a free financial aid information session and workshop. The event was designed to answer students’ questions about the FAFSA and relieve stress. At the workshop, financial aid representatives were available to give students information about paying for college, filling out the FAFSA and applying for scholarships and loans. Attendees were encouraged to register for the event prior to attending.

Seeking Justice interview Amos Quick III

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, Part Time Lecturer of Peace and Conflict Studies Mary Kendall Hope interviewed North Carolina House of Representatives Democratic Freshman Vice Chair Amos Quick, III on WQFS’s “Seeking Justice” talk show. Hope and Quick discussed Quick’s work in the North Carolina House, focusing specifically on North Carolina’s current redistricting process.
