The past few years there have been complaints that Serendipity is not what it used to be, but then again, what is?
The psychedelic-induced, keg-drinking, marijuana-smoking students that began this age-old tradition were not focused on their inebriation. Serendipity was, and will always be, about the Guilford community coming together.
“I mean, I think that the spirit of Serendipity itself has remained unchanged,” said Serendipity Co-chair Shanon Rule. “Overall, it’s about spring and music and bringing the community together to have a blast.”
That may sound clichéd at this point, but CAB has asked for input from as many members of the community as possible. They worked with students during open forums and surveys and talked to resident assistants, other clubs on campus, and the administration. They want it to be an event that the entire campus has a hand in creating.
We all want to have fun and let loose for a few days, which CAB, Campus Life and Public Safety recognize.
However, they also recognize the reality that hundreds of college students having a blast for two days straight do need to be regulated at times. We can keep the legendary reputation of Serendipity and also show them that we are able to be crazy, carefree, and responsible too.
Members of CAB have just as much stake in Serendipity weekend as other students. After they are done planning and scheduling the weekend, they are right there next to us dancing at concerts and slip-and-sliding in the sun.
They are the part of our community that contributes the most time to make sure that Serendipity is possible every year, and if we think about it, any Serendipity is better than none, right?
This event makes students giddy with holiday cheer. We paint our faces and frolic around campus with people that we may not know or even like, but for those two days each year we are all together.
