From panels to poetry, February at Guilford has been replete with Black History Month events thanks to the Multicultural Education Department and the Blacks Unifying Society. The organizers consisted of mostly students from BUS and the MED.
This year, students and faculty who attended events have been excited about the events on campus, especially the All Black Everything symposium about activism and integrity. The event aimed to celebrate the black community with culture, art and media. Presenters included students, faculty and alumni.
We at the Guilfordian want to commend the student leaders and faculty advisors who put the effort into celebrating black history this month. Those of us in the Guilford community who attended events learned a lot about black history and what blackness means to our fellow students.
We would also like to remind the rest of the community that black history is something we should continue to honor beyond February. It is important to have a month devoted to celebrating blackness, but we should be able to have discussions about race and celebrate blackness beyond this month.
It is also important to acknowledge that, even for people who are not black, we should all learn about black history. This month exists to educate people as much as it does celebrate blackness. For all of us, black history is important to know because it will help us move forward as a society and value black lives.
Thank you again to BUS and the MED. We look forward to experiencing the final events of the month.
The last few events of the month include The Element: Poetry Night on Feb. 26, the International Civil Rights Museum Guilford Getaway on Feb. 27 and the Journeys of Blackness banquet on March 5.
