As the weather becomes cooler and the trees begin to light up in an array of colors, it is obvious the midst of fall is upon Guilford College.

One thing not cooling down is the Guilford College sports teams seasons, as things are heating up with teams in the final games of conference play.

Each sport has had their fair share of successes thus far into the season, and it is important to take note of how each Quaker team is currently faring.

To start on the gridiron, the football team is coming off of a 41-21 rout over Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, Oct. 24, that improves them to 6-1 (3-1) on the season.

In that victory, senior quarterback Matt Pawlowski surpassed both 10,000 career passing yards as well as 100 career passing touchdowns as a Quaker.  Pawlowski is not the only person to reach such milestones this season, as senior wide receiver Adam Smith set new school records for total receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

The football team will travel to Catholic University this Saturday and will finish up the regular season at home against Hampden-Sydney College and Emory & Henry College.  With the Quakers in the midst of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship race, every week is vital.

The men’s soccer team regular season will be wrapping up on Oct. 31, closing out the regular season at Virginia Wesleyan College.  The Quakers fell in their Wenesday, Oct. 27, game against Lynchburg College 1-0 to fall to 5-11 (2-8), but five of those conference losses have been by a combined five goals.

The young men’s team has played a hard-fought season and will return a solid core next year.

The women’s soccer team is coming off of a huge Senior Day win over third-place Virginia Wesleyan as well as a win against Eastern Mennoite University in a rescheduled game.  The win propels the Quakers into a tie for eighth at 7-9-1 (4-6) in the conference with one conference game left to play.  The women will  close out the season at Shenandoah on Saturday, Oct. 31.

With a Quakers win and a Randolph College loss, the women could potentially clinch a spot in the ODAC Conference Tournament.

The women’s volleyball team is coming off of a sweep against Agnes Scott College this past weekend and hopes to carry this momentum into their final two matches of the season.  With a 6-16 (2-8) record, the volleyball team could still potentially earn a spot in the ODAC Conference Tournament.

The Quakers will travel to Emory & Henry on Thursday Oct. 29, before closing the season at home against Salem on Friday Oct. 30, a team Guilford swept earlier in the season.

Both the men and women’s cross-country teams are sprinting full force into the homestretch of their seasons.  This Saturday Oct. 31, both teams will be participating in the ODAC Conference Championships being held at Bridgewater College.

For those that are in or around the area, come out and support the Quakers as the runners contend for a spot in regionals.

The Quakers golf team wrapped up their fall season with a third place finish in The O’Briant Jensen Memorial Golf Tournament at the Sedgefield Dye Course in Greensboro.  The Quakers will then have the winter off before getting things started back up early March.
