Guilford introduces intramural athletics program
Signups for intramural sports are open, and it is time for the Quakers to get involved. Guilford College provides activities for students with a wide variety of interests, from academics and athletics to campus life, and has now added another activity to its repertoire.
Intramural athletics are meant to give students a place to have fun playing the sports they enjoy without the headache and stress of a varsity-level sport. There are no expectations for practices, and students can play at whatever level they please. According to stateuniversity.com, intramurals have been a part of United States institutions since the late 1800s, and since Guilford was founded in the 1800s as well, it only makes sense that the Quakers now have intramurals.
Guilford is offering ten different sports in its intramural program: basketball, kickball, ping-pong, pool, soccer, softball, volleyball, e-sports, cornhole and tennis. Students can sign up for these events on Guilford College’s IMLeagues database, create an account under Guilford College and select the “Get in the Game” icon to register.
Officially being offered in winter of 2022 are coed, men’s, and women’s three vs. three basketball leagues. Registration for basketball is open now and ends Feb. 14 at 11:59 p.m.; the season begins February 21 and ends March 8. Also available in the winter season is the e-sports “Super Smash Bros Ultimate” tournament on the Nintendo Switch. Registration for the tournament is open on Feb. 16 at 12:00 p.m. and ends on February 25 at midnight.
There are four events offered during the spring 2022 season as well: three-on-three open basketball tournaments; four-on-four coed, men’s, and women’s sand volleyball; open cornhole tournaments; men’s singles tennis tournaments; and women’s singles tennis tournaments. Registration for spring basketball opens up on April 20, and sand volleyball registration begins March 16. Registration for the cornhole tournament begins April 11. Men’s tennis registration is open on March 9, and women’s tennis registration begins on March 16.
The Guilfordian interviewed Guilford junior Allden Horne about his thoughts on the new addition of intramural sports.
“I believe that the addition of intramural sports is great for Guilford College,” Horne said. “It will add to the many student-life opportunities that make Guilford what it is. I am really pumped for the cornhole tournament; there have been a couple in the past and they were really fun.”
Guilford senior and residential advisor Max Lattomus also shared his thoughts about intramurals.
“Intramural sports are exactly what the Guilford College community needs after facing a lot of restrictions over the past two years,” Lattomus said. “I am really excited about this new opportunity for students to come together to have fun and build community with others across the campus throughout the year.”
“I think intramural sports are a great way to meet people on campus and make friends,” said senior and Education Studies major Makayla Felton. “Get out of your room and just do something for casual fun. Also, I think it is a great stress reliever to do something less taxing on the mind after a long day of class or maybe just homework!”
