Whether you’re unfamiliar with student-athletes at Guilford College or thinking about attending more athletic events on campus, the story of Enzo Geremski, a first-year forward on Guilford’s men’s basketball team, might capture your interest and kindle your enthusiasm for Guilford sports. The Guilfordian recently sat down with Geremski to learn more about his love for the game and why he chose to play here at Guilford.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A: I’m a first-year here at Guilford. I’m on the men’s basketball team. And I’m just really excited for the opportunity I have to play.
Q: Where were you born? Tell us about your hometown.
A: I was born 30 minutes away from here in Winston-Salem. I played basketball growing up at about 5 or 6 years old. I played a lot of sports growing up including basketball, soccer and baseball. But, for some reason, basketball is the one that resonated with me. I wasn’t even that good at it, but it just really hit home for me. I enjoyed doing it, so I stuck with it.
Q: What made you get interested in playing basketball?
A: I don’t know. I just love the team aspect of it. Baseball seemed really individual to me. You know, it’s a team sport, but it just seemed really individual. But basketball, there was so much that went into it. It was more complex to me and I really enjoyed that aspect.
Q: Tell us how you got to Guilford. What made you interested in coming to Guilford?
A: My biggest thing when I was getting recruited to play basketball was to go where I was the most wanted. That was the saying I went by. The coaches at Guilford, more than any other coach, kept in contact with me constantly and they really made me feel like they wanted me to be here. So, with them wanting me to be here, it made me want to be here. This was the school where I was the most wanted, so that’s why I chose it.
Q: Other than playing basketball, are you involved in any other activities or clubs here at Guilford?
A: I am a member of GCM, the Guilford Christian Ministry. It’s a moderate-sized group. We meet once or twice a week and learn and grow in our faith together.
Q: For those who are interested in coming to Guilford or those who are interested in playing a specific sport for a specific school, what would you tell them?
A: For those interested in coming to Guilford, if you’re hesitant, I would say that Guilford is a place that is extremely welcoming. It’s one of the most welcoming places for all kinds of people. This is the biggest conglomerate of all kinds of people. You’re gonna meet someone here that you’ve never met anywhere else. And in terms of playing a sport, I would give my own advice that I followed. Go somewhere you’re most wanted. I wouldn’t pick the school, I would pick the coach. Pick a school where the coach wants you the most because that’s where you’re going to thrive. That’s where you’re going to be nurtured the most.
